MIRIGAMA – 3 MW AGRI-SOLAR PROJECT
Renventure Pvt Ltd, in partnership with Suntech Solutions Pvt Ltd, has officially commenced construction of the 3 MW Agri-Solar Sustainable Development Project in Mirigama, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy journey. With a total investment of LKR 450 million, the project began on 14th January 2026 and is scheduled for completion and commissioning by 12th August 2026. This innovative project integrates clean energy generation with sustainable agriculture, utilizing a 9-acre cultivation zone for ginger, turmeric, and pepper grown beneath and around elevated solar panel structures. Designed on agrivoltaic principles, the development optimizes land productivity by producing both renewable power and high-value agricultural crops from the same land area. Clean Energy Impact Once operational, the 3 MW solar plant is expected to generate approximately 4.5 to 5.0 million units (kWh) of electricity annually, supplying clean power to the national grid. This output is sufficient to meet the annual electricity needs of over 3,500 households. The project will also deliver substantial environmental benefits by reducing 2,500 to 3,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per year. This reduction is equivalent to planting over 120,000 trees or removing more than 1,500 petrol-powered vehicles from Sri Lanka’s roads annually. Sustainable Agriculture Integration The agrivoltaic layout supports climate-resilient farming by providing partial shading, improving soil moisture retention, and reducing heat stress on crops. The cultivation of ginger, turmeric, and pepper under the solar arrays promotes: Improved crop yield stability Better water efficiency Enhanced soil health Adoption of sustainable and organic farming practices This model enables farmers to benefit from modern agricultural methods while maintaining consistent productivity throughout the year. Socio-Economic Benefits Beyond energy and agriculture, the project brings strong socio-economic value to the region by: Creating local employment during construction and operation Providing stable income opportunities for farming communities Enhancing skills in renewable energy and sustainable agriculture Strengthening rural economies Contributing to Sri Lanka’s national energy security A Model for Future Development The Mirigama Agri-Solar Project demonstrates how renewable energy infrastructure can coexist harmoniously with agriculture, setting a benchmark for future sustainable developments across Sri Lanka. By combining power generation, food production, and community development, this initiative reflects a progressive approach to national development and climate responsibility.
